A reno-ready West End condo, opened up to English Bay and built around custom millwork and one very loved colour.

Janna bought this West End condo reno-ready, with the flooring already removed, painted concrete underfoot, and original cupboards that had seen better decades. She loved the friendly strata and co-op hybrid building, the “vertical community” of neighbours, and being a short stroll from English Bay and Stanley Park. What she needed was a home that felt unmistakably hers.

Nothing was left untouched. Part of the wall between the kitchen and living room came down to make space for a cooktop peninsula with hidden induction, so Janna can cook or mix a cocktail with English Bay right in front of her. The bathroom was rebuilt top to bottom, the bedroom doorway was widened, and even the hallway closets got new organizers and sliding doors. Working with the quirks of a late 1960s building brought a few delays along the way, all of them resolved to create this gorgeous new space.

Custom millwork does plenty of quiet work here. The old bedroom closet became a bespoke double wardrobe flanking a storage bed, with side tables built in that double as hidden storage. In the bathroom, the original medicine cabinet is camouflaged behind a wood panel in the custom vanity. In the kitchen, a countertop appliance garage opens on all three sides when in use, then tucks away when company calls. A design this rich in millwork called for careful attention and several rounds of shop drawings, so every piece fits exactly as it should.

Colour led the way. Teal is Janna’s favourite, so Benjamin Moore’s Pacific Ocean Blue became the accent, popping boldly off Chantilly Lace throughout. In the home bar off the kitchen, the Night Heron mural from Hygge & West sets a moody, dramatic scene. Hickory floors and matching solid wood millwork bring the warmth, especially in the bathroom, where they meet cool white marble.
