Heritage Kitchen Renovation

Project Focus:

Interior Design, Space Planning, Material & Finish Selection, Project Coordination

A 1908 New Westminster home reimagined through the lens of Arts and Crafts design.

Heritage details were honoured while functionality was completely transformed for modern living. Created in close collaboration with Windsor Wolves Construction.

In this 1908 heritage home, my role focused on reimagining an outdated kitchen to improve functionality, circulation, and architectural integrity while honouring the character of the original structure. The existing layout limited workflow and created congestion at the rear of the home, particularly during gatherings.

This redesign centred on reconfiguring the layout to enhance movement and usability. The refrigerator was relocated, the sink was centred to establish balance, and passageways were opened to reduce bottlenecks and improve flow between the kitchen, back entry, and main living areas. These adjustments created a more efficient workspace while allowing the home to function comfortably during entertaining.

Material selections were guided by the age of the home and a desire to introduce colour with intention. Motawi artisan tiles from the “Summer” landscape series establish the primary visual focal point, informing a palette of Benjamin Moore “Herb Garden” cabinetry, Sherwin Williams “Irish Cream” walls, and grey-blue accents drawn from the tile work. The upper cabinets are also in “Irish Cream”, to expand the room by making them recede into the walls. Oiled bronze hardware reinforces the heritage character, while a carefully placed wallpaper accent wall adds depth and personality.

The result is a kitchen that balances period sensitivity with modern performance, improving day-to-day functionality while restoring a sense of architectural authenticity.

“Shona did an amazing job on the redesign of our outdated and cramped kitchen. She designed a space that both my husband and I love to cook and work in. She listens to what you want and transforms into a design that is both beautiful and realistic for the space. Thank you Shona for the stunning kitchen!”
