Carolyn and Andre are a lovely retired couple living in Port Coquitlam. They hadn't done much to update their living space in about 15 years, and decided it was time to invest in new furnishings and a new style.
In addition to redecorating their condo, they needed built-in storage solutions and a design plan to improve their obtrusive electric fireplace surround. The lighting in their living space was also fairly useless and uninteresting.
They were ready for a fun change!
Adding wall-to-wall cabinetry in place of the old fireplace made the space more useable overall, as empty floorspace on either side of the large cast surround was converted into storage.
The entire living space now appears larger and more inviting; by elongating the fireplace wall, we created a more cohesive space, whereas the previous fireplace cut the room in half.
Providing display space for Carolyn and Andre was a key aspect of the fireplace design overall. Previously, they had items either hidden away in a hutch or out of the way on a shelving unit in the den space adjoining the kitchen.
Opening shelving flanking the TV allows trinkets and mementos to be enjoyed daily, without overcrowding. The ample mantlepiece provides a secondary serving area for food and drink when friends and family come to visit.
Whether it be watching a soccer match for Andre, reading a good book on a miserable day for Carolyn, or enjoying a cup of tea with family and friends, this living room has become a bright, open, and functional space that Andre and Carolyn can enjoy for years to come.
