A home styled to balance cultural heritage, collected works, and a refined West Coast sensibility.

This Belcarra home was styled and furnished to better reflect my clients’ evolving aesthetic and cultural history. Custom furnishings from their previous residence no longer suited the scale or architecture of the new home.

Drawing on the homeowners’ South African roots and their life in British Columbia, the design approach balanced cultural nostalgia with a West Coast sensibility. Natural finishes, ocean-inspired blues and greens, and a restrained palette created a foundation for their curated collection of art and objects to remain central.

A tree root coffee table in the TV room established the West Coast concept, influencing materials, themes and colour selections throughout. A custom wooden mantle in the main living area reinforced this creative direction. Existing artwork, including original pieces created by a family member, was reframed in white to unify presentation and enhance visual clarity.

Two teak and stained glass lanterns, handmade by the client’s late mother, were restored and converted into pendant lighting with the support of a lighting specialist, introducing both craftsmanship and continuity into the family room.

The result is a flowing interior that balances simplicity with personal narrative, allowing heirloom pieces and collected works to anchor the design while creating a refined and contemporary West Coast environment.
