A long-lived Coquitlam home reimagined for light, flow, and everyday living.

After more than 30 years in their Coquitlam home, my clients undertook a main floor renovation to improve layout efficiency, natural light, and long-term functionality. The project included reconfiguring an under utilized hallway, renovating the kitchen and bathroom, and creating a dedicated home office and crafting space.

This redesign began by eliminating an awkward corridor and reallocating that square footage to expand the bathroom. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining area improved sightlines and allowed light to move more freely throughout the space. A grid of recessed lighting and a soft off-white palette further brightened the interior, while a new wood banister introduced warmth at the stairwell.

The kitchen was designed to support daily cooking, with expanded counter space, a designated coffee station, a shallow pantry for visibility, and a pull-out spice cabinet for efficiency. A matte faux-stone porcelain backsplash adds texture and durability, while a framed recycled glass mosaic introduces subtle detail within a contemporary palette.

The bathroom was reimagined with aging-in-place considerations, featuring a walk-in shower with integrated bench and improved storage. A custom built-in office and crafting area completes the renovation, incorporating deep drawers, integrated cubbies, and a denim blue accent to anchor the space.

The result is a brighter, more functional home designed to support everyday living with clarity and intention.

“Our home was built in 1979 and felt completely stuck in the past, with dated finishes, dark carpets, and a small, closed-in kitchen that no longer worked for our lifestyle. We wanted to transform the house into something bright, modern, and functional.

Working with Shona Fraser of Heartspace Interiors was an incredible experience. By removing walls and rethinking the layout, she helped completely open up our kitchen and living space. The custom cabinetry gave us the storage and counter space we had always dreamed of, and the result truly feels like our dream kitchen.

Our main bathroom was also transformed. By removing an awkward hallway and expanding the space, the new design allowed for a large walk-in shower with a bench, beautiful custom cabinetry, and a layout that feels like a spa retreat.

Throughout the home, Shona guided updates that made a huge difference, including new flooring, lighting, trim, and crown moulding. Every detail came together to create a cohesive and modern space that finally feels like home.

Shona, along with Andrew Little of SCL Contracting and Darrel Doering of Armarium, did a fantastic job bringing the project to life. It was truly a pleasure working with everyone involved.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping create the home that will be our forever home.”
