A home reimagined as a calm architectural backdrop for a lifetime of collected art.
This False Creek condominium was fully renovated to support aging in place while celebrating the homeowner’s extensive international art collection. Having traveled widely and acquired pieces from multiple continents, the design approach centered on creating a neutral architectural backdrop that would allow these works to remain the focal point.

A cool white and soft grey palette establishes a calm, monochromatic foundation, allowing colour drawn from the artwork to inform accent selections throughout the home. The living area was expanded by removing a former glass block wall that enclosed a guest room, improving sightlines and connection to the view toward Granville Island. The reconfigured space now includes a built-in desk, a reading area, and a pull-out sofa for occasional visitors. An ethanol-burning fireplace with a custom floating hearth introduces warmth and provides display space for ceramics and sculpture.

The kitchen balances simplicity and impact. Slab-style cabinetry creates a clean backdrop for a chevron mosaic backsplash, while the grey-on-white scheme complements the homeowner’s predominantly yellow décor. A stretched and reframed African batik is featured above the eat-in bar, reinforcing the global narrative of the space.
Given the homeowner’s lifestyle, a formal dining area was replaced with a flexible solution. A transformable table functions as a compact console for daily use and expands to accommodate card games and gatherings.

Artwork previously displayed as a dense gallery wall was reorganized by region and reframed within large white mattes, allowing each piece to read clearly. Open wall space was intentionally preserved for future acquisitions.
Accessibility considerations were integrated throughout the renovation, including a spacious walk-in shower with provisions for future grab bar installation. The client’s great grandmother’s armchair was reupholstered and restored, ensuring continuity between past and present.
The result is a refined, highly personal residence that balances accessibility, flexibility, and a strong curatorial focus.

“Shona helped me with my condo renovation 3 years ago. Every time I walk in the door the interior still brings a smile to my face. During this time of the Covid pandemic I am able to feel content and comfortable with my surroundings.
Shona was very helpful with colour and layout suggestions. There was a lot of new but we did integrate some of my possessions. The focal part of my interior revolves around artwork I have collected in my travels. Shona came up with the idea of how to group my pieces, there are a lot!
Shona was respectful of my budget and unafraid to tell me when my ideas were good and also when they were bad! She is an easy person to like and I would not hesitate to recommend her services to my friends. After completion I showed off to friends and neighbours, it was an overwhelming success.“
